November

Nov 30, 2007 Hi Dennis, having grown up in Whipple, I have certainly enjoyed your page. I especially enjoyed reading the letters and comments published. I was born in the 2nd house on Whipple Rd (going towards oak Hill) just up from the company store in November of 1934. My grandparents, who lived in that house were John William Smith and Lola Smith, (yep, the same grandparents that were mentioned by Connie Smith Osteen). Her father and my mother were brother and sister. I attended Scarbro Elementary, 1st thru 8th and have attached a picture of the 6th & 7th grade class of 1947/48, As you can see, they include several people already mentioned on your page, Bill Massie, Tom Moore for example. I am in the bottom row, 2nd from the left. Kitty Hatfield, Hillard "Babe" Stover, Charles Phillips, "Peanuts" Rogusky and C.D. Hypes are some of the other names that I recall. Our teacher's name in the 7th grade as best I can remember was Mrs. Mann.
I don't want to make this a book so will wrap it up for now. I hope you will continue your good work. I know there are a lot of people out there that enjoy it." Jim Scott
P.S. Is there anyone else out there that remembers those great homemade potato chips packaged in wax paper bags that sold in the drug store in the 40's for a nickle?

Nov 29, 2007 "Hi Dennis, Ok, I will do my best, the pictures of Molly May Scott were taken before 1944, that is as close on those that I can get.
The one of Vivian and Alene Evelyn, was taken in 1974, also the one with Vivian, Amos and Totsie at the same time.
The one with Florence (Umsie) Lola Ann Smith and Alene Evelyn was taken in April of 1957.
The one with Raymond and Ronald about mid 1940's.
Vivian Smith Blake by herself was taken in the mid 70's. All of the rest I haven't the faintest idea. I just want these posted so that the rest of the family can see them and so they won't get lost, sold or whatever when I die. I think we loose so much when that happens.  Thank you again for your wonderful site. My husband who was born in Whipple in his grandmother
Smith
house enjoys looking at the pictures as I do."  Thanks again,
Nancy J. Scott

Nov 21, 2007 "Hi Dennis. My family were one of the first settlers of Whipple and Scarbro.
The family was that of Hughart and Pugh. Charles Hughart and wife Mary Polly Withrow and their son Joseph Lewis Hughart and His wife Emily Jean Smales Hughart. Their house is still standing at the bottom of the road at the Whipple exit in the bend of the road.

Joseph Lewis Hughart was the constable for the area and lived there until his death in 1912.  Charles and Mary lived there until their deaths in the 1880's.

One very big problem for our family is that the grave yard in Scarbro they are buried in is not listed in your site and we are unable to find it. I have driven over there several times and found nothing. Our family knows it is there because my grandmother took me there about 35 years ago. It was reported that the headstones have been vandalized and knocked over.   The directions are on the Old Plum Orchard Lake road. But having not been there in so many years, I cannot remember exactly where it is. It sits right on the side of the road., But Plum Orchard lake road splits off immediately upon entrance to the left and the right. The grave site would not be very far up the hill. We don't know which way to go now it has been so long. The place is so overgrown on both sides of the road to the left.

I need your help and anyone else who might know of this place.  Thank you for your help and the help of any other people in the area."  Randall B. Reno,  Beckley WV

Anything that we could find out about the Honaker family would be
appreciated." Helen Smith Pavlik,  Elizabeth, Pa

Oct 30, 2007 "I was the pastor of the Methodist church in 1969. At that time It was part of a 3-point work, including Hilltop and Harvey Chapel.  I was pleased to see that the Scarbro church has been updated. The pictures look so much better than what I remember from 1969.  I was also in the Army, so left Scarbro when I received orders for Viet Nam."  Warren Althaus, Ph.D.

Oct 29, 2007 "Hello. At one time the Cranberry New River Company Store was listed on the National Registry with it being up for sale, does this status come under review?  It will be a shame for the old miner's time cards and other records to be destroyed and lost forever. A reply is not necessary, just food for thought.  I did enjoy your site and links."  Jane A. Boyd

Sep 23, 2007 "Hi Dennis. Would you please see that Sandra Faye Kessler receives my e mail address. We were neighbors. She sent pictures from school days. My sister Jean Treadway Jacobs lives in Plant City, Fl. I called her and sent the photos to her and told her about your web site. Interestingly enough, we discovered while talking, the two of us were recently thinking of the years past. I just recently surfed the white pages for Faye's brother, Doyle and found an address for him. Not knowing Faye's married name, I thought perhaps I could track her through him. Christine Davison was another close friend. Thanks and keep up the great work." Norma Treadway Gordon, West Palm Beach, Florida

Aug 28, 2007 "Hello Dennis, I've just recently inquired about the Walters, Johnson, and Wriston families and would like to add that as a little girl, we lived on Salem Road in Oak Hill. I remember some of the names of the neighbors. There was a nurse that lived across the street from us and her name was Jackie Maynor, and a boy that I used to play in the creek with, his name was Ritchie Craigo, and next door was Mrs. Higgins, I'm sure she has passed by now, but if anyone has any old pictures of my house or general location please e-mail." Sheila Faye Walters (Fredricks)

Aug 27, 2007 "Hi Dennis. It's Sheila Walters (Fredricks) again. I just wanted to add that my mom's mother lived in Scarbro right beside the power station (Carl and Betty Clayton). This is where her brother, Shannon Browning lives after they moved to Clayton Lane. Also, I'm not sure how to get in touch with some of the people that have made comments on your site. If anyone has anything to share please e-mail me or write. I have heard my family speak of the Wristons, and believe that my grandmother, Betty Clayton, had a good friend that was a Wriston in Scarbro." Sheila Faye Walters (Fredricks)

Aug 27, 2007 "Dennis, Thank you for this wonderful site. I was trying to find some history on my family, and just happened to find it. I don't know a lot about my family, because they were never very close, but I have always wanted to, and hopefully with your site, it will be possible. My name is Sheila Faye Walters (Fredricks), and my parents are Jack Ray Walters and Connie Faye Johnson (Walters). Her mother's name was Betty Clayton married to Carl Clayton (Clayton Lane Scarbro, WV) She has a sister named Patricia Rivers in Scarbro, and a brother named Shannon Browning in Scarbro, and a brother named Calvin Clayton in Scarbro, and a Brother named Shane Clayton in Scarbro, and a sister named Angie Love in Scarbro. Other brothers and sisters: twin brother - Bobby Johnson, Susie Johnson, Marty Johnson, Pete "Pee-Wee" Johnson?, Johnny Johnson. She was raised by her grandmother, Goldie Johnson. My father's parents names are Raymond Newton Walters, and Martha Elizabeth?. My grandfather worked in the coal mines, and later raised game-cocks, and boxed. It is my understanding that he was a supervisor, or something at the mine. My dad (Jack) was 7 years old when he was run over by a train, resulting in the loss of his right leg. He has 6 brothers and sisters. Sisters: Anna Mae Walters (Craddock), Patsy Walters (Lafferty), Becky Walters (Lucas), Brothers: Tommy Walters, Bucky Walters, Larry Walters. I lived on Salem Road in Oak Hill until I was in the second grade, and then moved away. Our house burned there on Salem Road. I went to Oak Hill Elementary School, and I remember my Second Grade Teacher was Mrs. Scarbro, and I just loved her. I would really appreciate it if anyone has more information about my family because what I have told you here is all I know. Pretty sad." Sheila Faye Walters (Fredricks)

Aug 24, 2007 "Hi Dennis, I just came upon your web site today. Needless to say I haven't gotten anything else done today. I have enjoyed every minute. We lived in Scarbro in the 1930's my brother John Lewis Smith and I (Helen) were close friends with Ann and Bill Bishop. We built things like a Merry go round, Ferris wheel, bob sleds. We hunted fossils on a slate dump, (found some of the best fossils like ferns, bugs, flowers, gathered nuts in the woods back behind Tank Hill). I remember once my brother and I were to take care of their cat " Tinker" while they were away. She had 4 kittens. We took very good care of and after about 3 days Tinker moved all her kittens to our house, it was an all day job she had to go thru 2 white washed fences. She just got all done when the Bishops returned home. We felt so sorry for her the four of us kids each carried a kitten home!. I remember the day after Halloween, we always got up early to see how many outhouse's got turned over. It was big bad boys that did those kind of things, we weren't allowed to associate with the likes of them! I remember the movies. We went every Friday night to see the serials, there was always a cliff hanger and then we couldn't wait for the next Friday to come. I remember the company store and I loved talking to Bean's. I also remember Bean's playing ball at the Whipple ball park. I went to school in Whipple until I finished the 8th grade. Then I went to High School in Oak Hill until my family moved to McKeesport, Pennsylvania in 1941. I remember Dr. Price and his wife. She had a rose garden and my brother and I couldn't keep from picking her roses. We went to Sunday School at the Methodist Church. A gentleman named Mr. Taylor would ask each child what we wanted for Christmas, and then Santa gave each child what they had ask for. I have thought about this so many times through the years. It was the depression! Mrs. Hundly was the Sunday school teacher." Helen Smith Pavlik - Elizabeth, Pa

Aug 24, 2007 "Hi Dennis, I was shocked to say the least, when I put in "Scarbro History", your name pops up. Freaked me out, cause my brother Dennis Scarbro passed away several years ago. Funny how things sort of hit you in the face. I was born at home in Little Fork on Mossey. I left the state so I could find someone to marry that I wasn't related to. Have a good week end." Aug 3, 2007 "Hi Dennis, I hadn't visited the site for a while & was pleased to see that Faye Kessler was trying to get in touch with me. I remember her very well. She was a good & loyal friend, even though I think she beat me up once (smile). If you could give her my email address I would appreciate it. I too, am interested in a photo of The Fan. It used to scare me to death-I just knew it was going to suck me in. I would get below the level of the car windows so it couldn't get me, even though it had a screen on it that probably only a bulldozer could get through. But when I went back to WV to visit as an adult I was so disappointed that it was gone. I think the slab was still there. I can't remember when I Iast sent a check but another one is on the way. I hope you get lots of them; it's obvious you've got hours & hours in this site. But it has brought so much pleasure to so many of us. And I know that all of us appreciate you." Connie Smith Osteen

As you know Mom passed away on the 9th of July and I have received so many cards and flowers and emails from many of the folks that knew our family at home. I thought this would be a way to say thanks and tell them how much I appreciated their thoughtfulness. It was wonderful that so many friends had such nice things to say about my mom. I know she is now with people that loved her as much as I did. Thanks again for keeping the ole neighborhood buddies together. We are all scattered from coast to coast but this has proven that we all read and keep up with each other on this site." Brenda (Coffman) Hall

July 24, 2007 Hi Dennis, Just checked your site and was so glad to see the new letters. Really sorry to hear you had been ill. I was wondering what had happened as this was the longest I can remember you not updating. Don't worry us like that! We are all glad you are back.

Just a few notes on the 2007 '10th Scarbro Reunion.' It was pretty much acclaimed that this was the best one ever. There were 99 'neighbors' attending with there being 108 registered to attend. I did not hear one complaint from anyone. The food was good, the music by Casmir Pleva was great, and the conversations were simply wonderful. The oldest attending was Mrs. Pattye (Lam) Dunn at 92 years young. She graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1932. The farthest traveling was Delores (Ford) Hall from Riverton, WY.

I met many that I had not met before, one of which was Fred Burmer. He and I hit it off pretty well I think and I found him to be a interesting conversationalist. We shared several bits of information during the two days. I always liked his father "Smokey" Burmer. After he had gotten down to where he could not go out and tend a garden, he would garden in flower pots on his deck. It was amazing what all he would grow. Often he would see me on the motorcycle or truck and call me to stop and give me fresh peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, and the like.

I am attaching a list of those that registered to attend and several pictures.
The first picture is of Fred Burmer.
The second is of Drema (Lyons) Kincaid and Mary Ann (Heron) Murdock lighting the candles on the table set up for the Memorial of the Deceased after which Drema read a nice poem for the deceased.
The third is of Melissa Hinte and Norma Price about to receive the flowers from the memorial in memory of Melissa's mother Irene Price and Norma's husband Harry, both of which were Reunion Committee members.
Last in this mail (Real Player Video) is another of Casmir Pleva and his $10,000 accordion. We are so glad to have him and his music.

There was also a table set up for old pictures etc. from the area. Jane Burk, daughter of Paul Nichols Supt. of the Oakwood Mine (Carlisle) had some great books on display. They were hard bound copies of the company magazine that the New River Company put out for its employees. They were full of tidbits of information from the coal camps of the area. Jane has loaned me the books and I have copied some of the pictures of the school children from the local area. I will attach a couple of these in another mailing since I have maxed out the attachments for this one. So glad you are back, keep up the good work!" BJ Bernath

July 19, 2007 Hello Dennis, I am Eureka Argabright Orr, I e-mailed you a Photo of the Scarbro Elementary School a week or so ago. I know you are probably busy, but I would like to know if you received it or not, as I am not very adept at sending photos in e mails. My Father, Golden Argabright, used to work on the tipples, at almost all the mines in the surrounding area. He was born in Hill Top, WV. Many articles about the Argabright Family, were written in the Newspaper by the very well known Columnist at that time, Shirley Donnelley. My Mother Catherine, use to work in the Scarbro Elementary School Cafeteria along with Mrs. Humphrey. My Mother has since passed away, on May 08, 1999, one day after her and my Father's 66th Wedding Anniversary. My Sister and Brother attended Collins High School in the early 1950's, they are Norma Jean, and Johnny, Argabright. My younger Sister, Janice, and I attended Scarbro Elementary School, Mr. Gwen was the Principal at that time. Our Neighbors were Jr. and Velma Foster, they still live there, and we visit them when we can. Thank you for your site. We look forward to the updates." Eureka Argabright Treitinger Orr

July 7, 2007 "Here is a Photo Of the Scarbro Elementary School taken in 1970. Hello, I am Eureka Argabright Treitinger Orr. The Argabright Family lived in Gentrytown, and were members of the Scarbro Baptist Church. Our Parents, Golden, and Catherine Argabright. My Mother passed away in May of 1999. She is buried in the Hill Top WV. Cemetery, my Father still resides in his own home in Barberton, OH. he is very active at 95 years of age. He still walks 1-1/2 miles almost every day, he also still golf's and hunts, he stays here in SC with us in the winter. My Sisters and Brother consists of: Norma Jean Argabright / VanHook, N. Ft. Myers FL., -- John D. Argabright, Norton OH., --myself Eureka Argabright Treitinger Orr, Simpsonville, SC, also Janice Argabright Wilkinson, Simpsonville, SC. This Photo was taken of the old Scarbro Elementary School, while vacationing in WV in 1970. I attended school there until the end of the 8th grade, in 1953. It was then that my Father moved our family to to Ohio. I remember the School for Black Children, we use to go there in the evenings and play soft ball. We would go to the Scarbro Theatre on Saturdays, and watch the Cereal Cowboy movies, they continued from one Sat. to the next. Lots of good memories of those times and the area. Thanks for this site." Eureka Argabright Treitinger Orr

June 25, 2007 "Hi Dennis, I guess you are the expert for all things “Scarbro, Carlisle, Whipple, Oak Hill, WV”-related. Thank you for this wonderful website, it great to know I have this resource of my childhood. I saw an old friend’s name on your website too, her name is Vera Riley Lloyd. My sister and I were trying to find a picture of the old mining fan (a huge fan, commonly referred to as ‘The Fan’) that was a landmark of sorts in Carlisle. It was located about one mile from the Whipple Company Store, going toward Dothan/Mossy, close to my grandfather’s house, his name was Peach Jackson. My family (Sophia Bush, my mother) moved in Carlisle in 1966 to be close to my granddad, and I’ve always had fond memories of this huge fan close to his house and beside the school bus top, just up from the Whipple Company Store, New Hope Baptist Church (the church we attended and many of my family continue to attend), and Scarbro Elementary School (my school)…even the Gulf Gas Station where we would sneak across the street from school to buy candy and sodas! The fan was dismantled in the 70s, I think it was for safety reasons. Would you happen to have any photos of The Fan or know of any way I could found one? I look forward to hearing from you." June 24, 2007 "You have omitted the name Neely from your surname list. I grew up in Oak Hill, and my father, Daniel Neely was the County Assessor for quite a number of years. His brother and then his brother's wife, Lacy and Clara Neely, were the county clerks in the late 40's and 50's. My dad's position was in the 60's and 70's. There are and were quite a few Neelys in the area. I am surprised to see the name omitted from the list." Sharon Neely Niday Parkersburg, WV

June 15, 2007 "Hi Dennis, These are some pictures of Connie Smith Osteen family: I found these pictures of Ummies, Mrs. Smith and Marion Smith, Mrs. Smith is Connie's Grandmother. Marion is Connie's sister taken in our back yard - I think Ummies was Connie's aunt. These are some people of Whipple, that's Marion setting on sofa by her grandmother. The next set of pictures are Connie Smith Osteen cousins: Sammy Smith, Gequetta Smith, and Darrell Smith (c.1952-1953). They are the children of Ronald Smith. They lived on what they call Hunk Hill. Connie and her family lived on the corner on the same side of the old store up by the row garages. Her grandmother and they lived next to them in the next house and my family. We lived next to grandma Smith. Some good memory there. Thank you Dennis have a great day." Sandra Faye Kessler

June 14, 2007 "Hi Dennis, My name is Sandra Faye Kessler, Whipple and surrounding areas are my old stomping grounds. I notice some articles on your site are people I know . I seen Joe Smith and Connie Smith on here, Connie and I used to run around together, they lived two houses down from us on the corner---and their grandparents Smith lived next to us. I also ran around with her cousin Gequetta Smith, the daughter of Ronald Smith---- Connie had a cousin named Scottie we called him --I always said when I got married I wanted to name my son Scottie, so my youngest son is named Brian Scott Williams and I call him Scottie. I have some other pictures I want to send if you don't mind. I lived there in Whipple from 1946 0r 1947 until we moved from there in 1959 to Lorain, Ohio - I remember George & Willie Treadway family, John & Margaret Midrowsky family, Celo Smith family, Leo Smith family, Ronald Smith family, Joe & Tessie Davison, Osborns family, Bender family, Hagee family, Carter family, Joyce Sifer, Carol Stover, Jimmy Jenkin, Blanch DeLung, Vona Coffman, Nancy Rice, Wallace Dempsy, Rita Humphry, and the Ray Smith family. I sure am glad I stumble upon this site. I printed a picture off your site of my old home place the house I lived in, man that was nice, I know it since has been torn down when I was last there in 76 or 78. I think they build a new home there, man this has brought back many good memory. I know when we moved from there I was so homesick. My dad Cecil A. Kessler worked in the coal mines there all those years. He was in a cave in there too but I thank God he survived. Is there any way I can get a hold of Connie Smith Osteen can you give her my e-mail address and have her to e-mail me; Dennis you keep up the good work and I thank you so much. I know its hard work keeping up with all this. I'm sorta new on this machine and I get sorta upset with this thing sometimes when I can't get it to cooperate with me." thanks again, Faye Kessler

June 7, 2007 "Dennis, I was looking at the comments on your page. I remember some of the names. Becky Tolli I was one of her older sister's friends as a child. I hadn't thought of them for years. We lived next door to them. Her entry was Aug. 23 2006 is there any way you could put me in touch with her by e-mail. I would like to find out how the family is doing. If you could give her my e-mail address. I was friends with her sisters Cathy, Debbie and Patty. I would appreciate it." Thanks, Debbie (Johnson) Cramer

June 5, 2007 "Dennis, I was so thrilled when I found this site. I was raised in Scarbro, and had looked for years for pictures of the old Scarbro elem. School. I lived on the hill behind the old company store, right behind the Methodist church I remember when the old company store was opened. My grandfather worked with Frank Tolli delivering groceries. I remember Beans Craft, and Ann Errington was the post master, Beans wife Alma worked in the post office to. My grandfather's name was Roy Lanham. It was a trip back in time to look at some of those photo's. If you could possibly get any pics of Scarbro School in the 60's let me know. I now live in Nashville Tennessee, My child memories will always be Scarbro." Sincerely, Debbie (Johnson) Cramer

May 30, 2007 "Hi again Dennis. Just thought I would send a picture of Father Paul Yuenger having a Memorial Mass at the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Scarbro this past Memorial Day. It was a beautiful day and the turnout was good for the service. Father Yuenger is a former truck driver and his messages are always uplifting. After the Mass, the Knights of Columbus had a picnic lunch for those attending complete with West Virginia hot dogs. Needless to say, everyone enjoyed the good food and fellowship. Also on Sunday, I was getting 'dog walked' and stopped by the Whipple Company Store and met the new owners, the Lynn family and what nice people they are. I hope their restoration of the store building and Miners Museum are successful." Thanks again for the site. BJ Bernath

May 15, 2007 "Hi again Dennis. I just checked into the site again the other day and saw the letter by Emma Bostic concerning her grandfather and the Scarbro Methodist Church.
I thought that I would walk up and take a picture of the church for her. I was so lucky to catch my friend Max Bobbit and his wife Deloras at the church doing some cleaning for a district meeting they are to host at the church. I asked about the history and the ministers that had served the church and Mrs. Bobbit searched around and gave me a copy of the recent history of the church and told me if I came back, she would have me a copy of the early history. Briefly, the church was founded in 1901 on property donated by New River Coal Co. with company executive Samuel Dixon as overseer of the construction of the building. It was founded as a community church and it is thought that a Rev. Wilson was the first pastor with all denominations attending.

In 1910 the church became a Methodist Episcopal South. In 1939 the church became Methodist and in 1969 the Methodist Church merged with The Evangelical Brethren and became the United Methodist. The building has gone under a couple of renovations, the latest being in 1999 when the high ceiling was restored to original and the windows redone. The beautiful arched stained glass window on the East side was designed and built by Don Davis, one of our good neighbors here on 'Home Brew Alley.' It is really pretty catching the morning sun.
The church has a loyal and active membership of about 20-25 that attend on a regular basis and a fine bunch of souls they are.

The pastors of the church are as follows:
1910 J. M. Hicks
1911-1913 R. S. Bias
1914 J. E. Brown
1915 G. W. Williams
1916 ?? Scott
1917 unknown
1918-1919 L. P. Kirk
1920-1924 A. H. Perkins ??

1928-1929 Frederick Oxendale
1930-1931 W. L. Reid
1932-1934 M. G. Flowers
1935 P.E. Thornburg
1936-1939 R.J. Chenoweth
1940 W. E. Thomas
1941 A. F. Eggleston

I am attaching a couple of pictures of the church as well as pictures of the First Baptist Church and The Full Gospel Church of Scarbro that began as the Presbyterian Church located across the street from the Scarbro Company Store and theater building.

I will also mention while I am writing that the Scarbro, Whipple, Carlisle Reunion will be held at the Oak Hill Holiday Inn on Friday July 13, and Saturday July 14. The cost for the event is $15 per person for the mixer on Fri. evening and the lunch on Saturday. Casmir Pleva plans to attend again and provide us with music. Door prizes will be provided. May 11, 2007 " Dennis, I know you want additions, but I hope you will help me with a problem. My grandfather, Tilden Shields Bostick was an ordained Methodist Minister who substituted to preach after he retired. His last preaching assignment was in a church in Scarbro, sometime in the period 1940-58. Evidently there is no active Methodist at this time Scarbro (info. from yellow pages. I hope you or someone remembers the church, or may even have pictures of the church. My brother and I often went with him to the church, but were too young to remember any pertinent information. If you post queries, please post this , if not I would appreciate any info. regarding the church." Thanks, Emma Bostick

Born at Oswald, living most of my youth at Whipple, attending Scarbro Elementary and Collins High and leaving the state in the mid-fifties. Have you given any thought to a section " Do You Ever Wonder What Happened to me ?" or something of similar topic. I often wonder what happened to Verline Evans, Whipple. We attended school together. By reading the Tribune, I am able to see who has passed on. also, by looking in the Archives, I find friends and family members have passed on. Your Web Site is great. I will return." Apr 20, 2007 "Hello, I am Nancy Wriston Massie, married to Joe Massie who was born at Sun, moved to Carlisle as a baby, grew up in Carlisle. Joe is son of late Charlie Massie, and Mattie Massie who is still living at Carlisle, and is now 99 years young. We are looking for information on the First Baptist Church of Scarbro, which was first called Bragg Memorial, and later became First Baptist of Scarbro.. Any one with any information to help me would sincerely be appreciated. Also, I noticed a name of Dana Wriston of Shawnee, Oklahoma on these pages. Wondering if he might be a relative of mine, as my dad, the late Milton Wriston had family from Kincaid area. Hoping if Dana sees this he might e-mail me. Thanks for your help. Joe and I reside on Salem Road, Oak Hill. Both retired. Thanks!" Nancy Wriston Massie

Apr 19, 2007 "Hi Dennis, It has been awhile since I wrote. I was looking for my husbands grandfather J. Lusinsky who died in a mine in WV. I am in contact with Walter Iganovich who lives in Beckley, WV. What a great guy he is. He has been helping restore an old coal miners cemetery in Glen Jean, WV. He not only found the grave, he has given me all the information I need to know about this man who died at 35. No one in the family ever knew him. Now we know how he died and where. Also what church he belonged to. He lived in Scarbro while working in different mines. Walter has been sending me pictures and history of the cemetery. If you look at the picture of the Glen Jean Bank the cemetery is behind it on the hill. I am planning to go to Beckley, WV in October and Walter will show us where everything is. I have been very excited about the whole thing, So has the whole family. I thought you would like to know about this great find." Thanks, Marge Fesus

I saw where Brenda (Coffman) Hall had signed a guestbook for my Aunt Naomi (she passed March 29) I was wondering if Brenda lived right across from the Pauley's? If I remember correctly her Mom's name was Dolly. If you could let me know. If it's the same Brenda, she was so sweet to us kids when we would go visit my Grandma or should I say Mamaw (Nellie). Maybe you could forward this to her and if she would like to contact me then she could." Thanks so much! Deb Clark

Mar 26, 2007 "Hello Dennis, I was just looking at the Scarbro, Oak Hill site and noticed that in the 1940's section there is a picture of some boys in the 1947 Baptist Church Sunday School Class. One of them is related to me, Howard Reid. I noticed that the picture was submitted by Edward Dziedzic. Just wondered if you had his e-mail address. This Howard had two uncles Elderidge and Hubert Reid who were killed in the mines there or nearby. I am trying to run down further information. The Hubert Reid lived in Terry Village, of Wright, Raleigh Co. WV. in 1910. Howard also had an uncle Frank Reid who is buried in Oak Hill close to Howard's father. Can you help me here?" Thanks so much. Larry Chandler

The second picture is of Harriette (Stephenson) Webb My grand mother taken in Scarbro in 1956
The third picture is of my grand father, Edward Livingston Webb. This picture was also taken about 1956, in Scarbro.
The fourth picture is of the Webb family. This picture was taken about 1943 in Scarbro. Right to left is Harry Webb, Edward Webb, Harriette Webb, and Thomas Webb. My father at the was in Connecticut for submarine training.
The fifth picture is of me at seven years old, and my cousin Monnette Webb at sixteen years old. This picture was taken in 1955. 1955 was the last year we took our vacation to West Virginia. My grand parents died in 1956.
The sixth picture is of my parents wedding in 1945 after his return from the South Pacific.
The seventh picture is of my grand father with a crew on the Virginian RR. He was listed as a brakeman.
I hope these pictures will help. I believe I have others as well as documents that I will send at a later date. I do have a question? I am not sure of my grand parents address or the name of the street they lived on. I do know that it was purchased by a retired military person. We drove up the hill past the Company store and went to the right. When you pass the church you went straight back, and it was the last house on the left. Beyond the fence was once a pasture, and power lines. If anyone can help I would be very applicative." Thank You, Thomas Webb

Mar 14, 2007 "Hi Dennis, My name is Thomas Webb. I live in North Waterboro, Maine. I have been following your web site for three years, and feel it is time to add what information I have. My father (Frederich Raymond Webb) came from Scarbro. He was born in Oak Hill, September 2, 1927, and moved to Scarbro with my grand parents. My grandfather, Edward Livingston Webb, born in Paint Creek, married my grandmother, Harriette Stephenson, in Scarbro on Aug 11, 1910. At the time they were married he was a brakeman for the Virginian Railroad. He had worked in the Oak Hill, Scarbro, And Whipple mines, but was black balled for being a union sympathizer, and organizer. His wish was to work with the union, but my grandmother was opposed, he went to work for the Virginian RR. He worked for the Virginian RR long enough to become an engineer. His picture is in a Virginian RR history book. My grand father worked for the Virginian until his retirement. Both my grand parents died in 1956.
I am sending pictures of my family in hopes there may people that still remember. I have been building a family tree, and have much information about the Webb family. If there are people who would like to contact me please email .... I will try to help if I can. I will send pictures in a second email. Thank You for this site" Thomas Webb

Mar 8, 2007 "Hi Dennis, I grew up in the Whipple and was pleasantly surprised to find this site. What a pleasure it has been looking at all the old pictures and remembering a time long gone. I see old pictures of Whipple and remember the many days I walked those roads going back and fourth to Scarbro Elementary and to Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. My dad still lives in Whipple so I do come back often. Thanks for a great site, I have seen names of people that I had forgotten and it makes me smile." Vera Riley Lloyd

Mar 8, 2007 "Good morning Dennis. What a wonderful site! A cousin in Florida told me about the Price Hill site & I took off from there. I should introduce myself. Cora Sue Crumb Barret...born in Carlisle, 4th house on the left, after crossing railroad tracks. Supt. Nickels lived in the first house, Welch's in the second, I believe Omichenskis...then William Crumb. Millers and I remember Masseys and quite a few more. I was checking through your 1910 census....and found Lindsey Johnson & family...who was my great-grandfather, killed in the 1915 mine explosion. I was trying to find the Crumbs...when I saw Ollie Johnson as living with a Thomas Crusseb....then Susie, etc. I checked back.....Fleming Thomas Crumb...Susan Virginia Johnson...were my grandparents. Their eldest son, William, was my father. I believe in my own research...trying to figure out letters....especially in cursive ?? writing...if the 'm' could have been mistaken for 's'... This probably cannot be amended....nor corrected but just thought I would let you know. You and your website are greatly appreciated and I will be going back again & again. I'm not adept in computers...but enough to get from one link to another and a first grader probably knows more....but it is a delight to look and see your ancestors....at times, when I see their names, I want to cry....I'm so overwhelmed what these people went through...and we think we have it hard. So, if I had to hand out gold stars....You definitely would get a big one. Thanks, seems so inadequate, but at the present time...that is all i can think of... I will promise you that I will enlighten people of this wonderful site. Again...my heartfelt thanks for a wonderful job...." Cora Sue Crumb-Barret

Feb 23, 2007 "I was raised in Scarbro and went to Collins High and graduated in 1961 and moved to Michigan. I get back to my class reunions ever 5 yrs. I have a lot of fond memories there. I delivered newspapers there for several years, and worked at the company store my senior year and was in the butcher shop, produce area every Saturday. I worked for Beans (Mr. Craft and Mr. Harrington). believe it or not we would close the store at Noon, for lunch, and reopen at 1:00 again. Lots of great people and very Proud of my time there. We never had much, but, we never knew any different. I would entertain going back for the next reunion, and I know that we all have changed on the outside, But, inside, we never change! Hope to be involved in your updates and what is happening with everyone." Thanks! Edwin C. Kidd

Feb 20, 2007 "Hello again Dennis, I have not seen or heard any more chatter about the street controversy on WHITE OAK RD. Has anything been resolved on this subject? If not, I have reached a conclusion, based on the 1910 census as presented on this site. I believe that a very good representation of the population of Scarbro proper is presented and that EVERYONE lived on White Oak Rd, and Plum Orchard Rd. Only one other street was represented and that was TURNPIKE which was also a major street for Oak Hill. Apparently all roads/streets were of the same name and to identify exactly which road anyone lived on would be to identify them by the house numbers that were used at the time. If there were a map of some sort with the houses identified by their numbers, it might help. Still trying to be helpful. You are doing a fantastic job as always, Thanks." Fred Burmer

Feb 19, 2007 "Hi Dennis. I lost most of my E-Mail addresses when my computer crashed. I have recovered most of them thru e-mails. I haven't heard from Mary Jane Sanchez lately. Could you contact her and have her E-Mail me when she gets time. There is going to be a Page-Kincaid Reunion on Memorial Day Weekend this year. Also my Mother's family has a reunion at Cedar Lakes, Ripley, WV the same weekend. Mary Jane had mentioned the Sanchez's have a reunion every few years. I thought that if they were having one this year that we might get to see them. We try to see as many people as we can when we return there." Thanks. Dana Wriston Shawnee, OK 74804

P.S. I am still looking for Picture that my Mom had. There are so Many to look through. A lifetime of pictures.

I attended Fayetteville High School in the late 1930's and early 1940's and married my high school sweetheart, Junior Earl Feazell. Following WWII we moved north to the Delaware area. I would be interested in talking with anyone who knew the Christians, Feazells or McKinneys. Also possibly the Colemans of Oak Hill. Thanks for maintaining this terrific web site!" Jan 28, 2007 "Dennis, I grew up knowing the Bishop family in Scarbro. For a short period of time, we lived on the hill directly behind them. Pat and I were very small and played "Cowboy" together. He got into it a little more than he should one day and I still have a small scar between my eyebrows from the butt of his play pistol. Also, my Mother was driving to Oak Hill on a very slick road one morning and slid over in front of Mr. Bishop and hit his car. He was very nice and understandable. I also helped Mr. Bishop with Post Office work by delivering Special Delivery Mail for him." Richard Fitzpatrick

Jan 22, 2007 "Hello. Just came across your site – it’s great! I noticed some postings for the Pauley family, and wondered if you could put me in touch with Charley Pauley. I think that his grandmother and my grandmother were siblings (Eldora McKinney Devlin / Nellie McKinney Pauley). My grandmother passed away many years ago, and I would love to find some of my relatives!" Thanks! Anita Miller

Jan 19, 2007 "Dennis, William McKell built this bank about 1909. He owned the Glen Jean mine and the railroad spur that met the main line at Thurmond. During the coal mine wars, he had an opening made in the front wall near the top of the building. He manned this opening with a machine gun and planned to fire upon the striking miners should they attempt to take over the bank. More info is available on this subject at www.wvculture.org/goldenseal/index.html. These are publications published by the WV Division of Natural Resources." Dave Goode

Jan 19, 2007 "Dennis, were you aware that Walter Ignatovich, about 75 years of age, personally takes care of the old coal miners cemetery up on the hill in Glen Jean? He is aware of every burial there and many tombstones are engraved in foreign languages. His address is .... Beckley, WV 25801. He does not have a computer but has extensive knowledge about the history of Fayette county and the New River gorge. I'm sure he would gladly share his valuable knowledge." Jan 19, 2007 "Hi Dennis, my name is David Goode. I was raised in Oak Hill and left immediately after high school graduation in 1950. Spent my entire adult life in government service. I'm now 74 years old. About 6 years ago I became interested in finding my ancestors and it turned out to be a passion, a habit, an addiction. Seems once one gets into it you simply can't turn it off.

You may already be aware of what I am going to write but the Mormon church was one of my major sources of information. I am not a Mormon but they have Family History Centers at all their churches available to anyone to use for family research. They provide access to www.ancestry.com at no cost! Some years ago they sent people all over Europe copying birth, marriage and death records and they have these records on film at their main library at Salt Lake City. You can use their website www.familysearch.org and browse their catalog for films of locations where the Chadras came from in Europe. You probably won't find the name Chadra but if you find the town. Here you will find a series of films, usually 2 or 3 years each listing all recorded activities in the community. You can order films to review at the Center for a small fee. Usually these records go back to about 1800.

If I'm preaching to the choir, forgive me. You have a great website. On of the highlights of my life happened at Scarbro. The theater opened for one showing on Sunday nights at 9 pm. At about age 14 or so my parents gave me permission to go to the movie at Scarbro on a Sunday night with some friends. God, had I made the big time! Out on my own.....alone.....no parents. The first movie I saw there was Holiday Inn where Bing Crosby introduced the song White Christmas. I also remember Henderson Drug store had booths and the table tops were some type of rock, maybe marble and I couldn't carve my initials into the service.

Practically all my high school chums were from Scarbro, Whipple, Carlisle. Another great past time back then was prowling around the Whipple mine slate dump looking for fossils. I'm going to do that again one day. See 'ya." Dave Goode, San Antonio, Tx.

Jan 10, 2007 "Hello Dennis, I was in Oak Hill during the Christmas Holidays and I noticed that they tore down the old Pure Oil Station on the corner of Main & Old Scarbro Rd. (Bummer's Corner). What a shame, does anyone know why this happened?" Thanks, Joe Smith

Jan 10, 2007 "Hello again Dennis. Hope the new year found you and yours doing well. Once again I am submitting the deceased list for the Scarbro area. (2006) I am quite sure that the list is incomplete and there are deaths we did not hear about or did not get printed in the local paper. Hopefully we have not included anyone that is still living as has happened in the past. We have tried to keep the list to the actual Scarbro, Whipple, Carlisle, and Wingrove area and have not included the deaths in the Scarbro Post Office rural routes that also include Dothan, Mossy and Hill Top. If any visitor to the site has additional information on the death of any former residents it is welcome. As of yet I have no information on a 'slave cemetery' in Carlisle but hope to get some information from 'Granny Massie,' one of the area eldest residents. Keep up the good work." BJ Bernath

Jan 10, 2007  "Hi Dennis, Sorry I took so long getting back to you. I've had company and didn't have a chance to look further at the books. There are about 30 books. I didn't see any inscriptions inside. There are pictures, but not personal pictures, just pictures pertaining to the books.
I'm not sure of the exact age of the books, but they are quite old. Some of the books (other than the 30 I mentioned) were falling apart. I haven't thrown them away yet in case someone local was interested in the books. They might want to look at these damaged books as well.
I'm not sure of the exact towns, but my Grandmother was from the Ukraine and my Grandmother from across the border in Poland.
Let me know if you are interested in the books. Are your family members that speak Polish located here in WV or in Illinois where you are?
Thanks for such a quick response." Ann Cook - Scarbro, WV

Jan 10, 2007 "Attached is a picture of the New River Company Doctor's home in Scarbro. I believe that the home burned down in about 1960. I'm just not sure what year. I was raised next door to this home. This picture was taken in December 1955 when I was on leave from the Air Force. I remember some of the Company doctors that lived there (Price, Prillman, DuPuy). There was another doctor after DuPuy, but I can't recall his name. I knew Pat Bishop quite well. We graduated from Mt Hope High School in 1953. Many times I rode to school with him." Jim Thompson
