We will check all the records next time we go home, but if you could supply us with a copy of the immigration record I would be so grateful. Please either e-mail or snail-mail it to me." | Apr 8, 2008 | "Dennis, We are trying to find any information on the
family of Augustine Hovanski (son of Jan Hovanski) who
came to the US about the same time as your family 1907-1907. They also
were coal miners in West Virginia. They originally settled in Carlisle
and later moved to Beckley. All we knew was that they were from
Michalkovice, Austria. Do you know if Salt Lake has any records for
this period? I guess we would also like to know if there are any
records for this area of what is now the Czech Rebublic. Any help or
ideas would be greatly appreciated." Thank you. Susan Whitsett p.s. Forget to mention that Jan Hovanski was married to Frances Uher Reply: Hi, I host three WV genealogy websites, www.scarbrowv.com , www.eccleswv.com and www.chadra.com/genealogy.htm. You will find several years of correspondence relating to the miners and their descendants. I visited the SS Peter & Paul Church office at the new church in Oak Hill, WV in 2003. They have the original records of baptisms, marriages and births from the Scarbro (Carlisle, WV) church which is no longer in use. Also, at the Fayetteville Courthouse you can look up the county records on your family and they will copy the pages for you for a small fee. In Beckley, WV I found church records at St Francis De Sales Parish 614 S Oakwood Ave Beckley, WV 25801 Phone: (304) 253-3695 Fax: (304) 253-3694. Many miner families at Eccles, WV went there. I also found old records at the Beckley,WV courthouse. There was the family of Johann Hovansky (wife Franciszka) from Michalkovice, Czech Republic that arrived through Philadelphia on Aug 15, 1905 and went to Carlisle, WV. I have an image of the ship's manifest I could email to you. Your Frances Uher may very well by related to my great aunt Mary Uher who married my great uncle John Mlynek also from Michalkovice. updates from you lately. Is everything O.K., with you? I realize how
busy you are, and can appreciate that. Do you realize how many
people wait for your updates? It's almost like reading a novel, and waiting for the next page to be turned over, to see who wrote in, and about who they wanted to know something about, or relate some important thing that means a lot to them. Talk to you later." Bob Perry

| Apr 1, 2008 | "Hi Dennis: My name is Kaye Welch and I lived
in Scarbro until Nov. 1958. I was born in Oak Hill in 1949 and my
parents were Willie and Bob Welch. My daddy was a mine foreman.
Both died between Nov. 1957 and July 1958. My grand parents lived in
Scarbro and were John and Barbara Welch. They emigrated in 1907
and had 3 living children Ada, Annie and Bob. My grandmother’s
maiden name was Brabben and I believe William Brabben
was her brother. I live in MD and am planning on moving back to the
Hinton area soon. I am also trying to find out info regarding my
family. We did a family tree on my mother Willie Viola Anthony
born in McDowell County 1917 but have had difficulty finding anything
about my father’s side of the family since there is no birth record of
him in WV. There is no death record of his father either though we
believe he was killed in a mine explosion between 1917 and 1920. |

knew quite a few of the Payne family from Mossy. I'm going to
mention most of the ones I knew, and grew up known. If anyone who reads this, and would like to talk to me , please feel free to pass along my address. I should probably start with the eldest member that I remember. Samuel Reed Payne, and his wife Minnie. Now, you must remember, I am recalling things and events from my early teen years.
I think this is enough for this time." Bob Perry |

about his uncle. Thought he might enjoy this little tidbit. In around
1937 the father bought a new car, paid $500.00 for it. Every school kid in Scarbro went to see and touch it. it was a really big attraction and I know this because my brother and I were two of the kids!" Helen Smith Pavlik |

your articles. I have e-mailed you a few times before. I was wondering
if anybody remembers the murders of Doc Wingrove and his nurse
I don't remember what year it was to the best of my recollection it
was in the early 1960's. I was just a small child when it happened,
but I remember the stories. I ended up living in the house where it
happened in the late 1970's. The house sat on the hill behind the old
bar Mike's Den. I was just curious if anyone else remembered hearing
about it." Debbie (Johnson) Cramer |
| Mar 16, 2008 | "Hi Dennis ......this is a picture of my family's house on Mossy, when I was about 5 years old. My father, Ashworth Perry, was a coal miner, and worked about 43 years in the mines. This picture was taken around 1940/1941. As the picture shows, the house was located on the side of a mountain. I lived in this house until my senior year of high school. We then moved to Oak Hill, but I still finished my education at Kingston High School. In this picture, I am sitting next to my dog Spot, and my niece Wanda Faye Perry, ( my brother Jr. Perry's, daughter). In the background, from left to right, my sister Betty Ann, my sister, Dorothy Jane, and my mother Jewell. ( By the look on Spots face, I'm not sure he wanted his picture taken.)" Bob Perry |

Actually, it was both Jr. High, and High School. In this photo from left to right, my daughter Laura Lee Perry Riner, myself (Bob Perry), and my wife Betty Lou Perry. Our son, Jim, took this picture. | Mar 5, 2008 | "Dennis, this a picture of the church (Lick Fork Church Of God) that I attended for quite a number of years as I grew up. It was located at the mouth of Lick Fork, and Mossy Road. It was located on the side of a hill, and, at times if the weather was not good, was not too easy to get to. I don't remember the exact year, but they finally built steps of wood up to the church. There was a back road from Lick Fork, allowing cars to be able to drive up to the church. Now in this photo, you can see an oil drum, which was used for heat. When I was a young boy and attending this church, it was heated by a coal stove. As, you can see there are a few graves beside the church. Now, the one room school that I attended for three years, is located about 40 yards to the left of the church. I lived about 1/4 mile from the school. We used to take turns, taking a bucket, and going down the hill to a spring by one of the neighbors houses, and bringing water back to the school. Finally, the school district, built a water pump next to the school. To us, this was like a miracle. Of course, there was no indoor plumbing, so on one side of the school, was the girls toilet, and on the other side, was the boys. Now the only reason I mention this is because every Halloween, some one always turned the toilets over on their sides. Of course, no one was ever arrested for this action. This is the church that a lot of the people that have been named in messages to your web site, who lived on mossy attended at one time. This would include the Aliff, Payne, Smith, and of course, my family, the Perrys. One of your contributors, Omer Coleman, sent me a picture of the same church, showing the name as "Lick Fork Coleman Church". When I was growing up in that area, I was not aware, that one of his relatives had built the church." Bob Perry |
| Mar 2, 2008 | "Hi Dennis: Back on 6-25-07, one lady wrote to you
regarding the big fan at the foot of Carlisle Mountain. While I
never took a picture of it, I sure do remember it. I'm sure quite a few other people do also, as you had to pass by it on the way from Mossy to Oak Hill. The reason I mention the fan, is because I lived at least four miles away down on Mossy, and many, many times if conditions were right, we could hear the roar from the fan. I can only imagine how loud it must have been to the people who lived close to it. Since I have been reading your site, I haven't seen any comments about the huge slate dump at Carlisle Mountain. This was very close to the fan. There were cables strung from the mine, with a huge bucket attached, that hauled slate up to the top, then dumped it. This pile of slate was so big it looked like a mountain. Also, the pile was always burning which gave off a very foul smell. Speaking of Carlisle Mt., back in the 1940s' when automobiles were not quite as powerful as they later became, I remember my dad saying, if you havea car that could make it up the mountain, without having to shift gears into second, then you had a pretty good vehicle...." to find people I know. On 2-19-06, Tracey Nicholson, wrote to you regarding the Payne family from Lick Fork. Well,a s I grew up on Mossy, and lived very close to Lick Fork, I knew the only Payne family there. The father's name was Gorden, and his wife's name was Hallie. I knew them most of my young life. They had two daughters, Isabell, and Ruth Ellen. Back when I was a young boy, Gorden was the Sunday School
Superintendent of the Lick Fork Church Of God. There are a lot of
Paynes on Mossy that I knew when I was living there, and will

I know that there were many homes in what is now Plum Orchard Lake before they dammed it up, because one of my relatives, Levi Lively, lived there, and in the winter you can still see the foundation near Beech Bottom. I find it hard to believe that there are no photos of these homes (town?) at that time and would love to hear from/see the photos. I would also love to hear from anyone who knew these Livelys" Thank you so much, JoAnne Lively Davis |
| Feb 22, 2008 | "Saw your site for Scarbro and a mention of Highlawn Memorial Cemetery. Do you know if there is an online transcription of this cemetery? I am trying to research some Mackeys and Bunchs but am only able to perform online research. I was excited to see all that you had listed on your website. Both of the families came from Whitley Co, KY to Fayette Co, WV and the men of the family worked in the mines. The Mackeys were found more in the Scarbro area and the Bunchs in Lochgelly. Any insight that you may provide is welcome." Thanks again, Annemarie |
| Feb 21, 2008 | "On 8-24-07, Pauline (Paula) Scarbro Nelson,
wrote in that she was from Little Fork Hollow on Mossy WV. I grew up
knowing a Scarbro family in Little Fork. I believe the fathers name
was Vinton. I remember one son whose name was Jimmy. If
I am correct, their daughters name was Marcella, and a younger
son, Dennis. You know, it has been many years since I was a youngster,
living on Mossy, so my memory of some of the people may not always be
exact. I don't recall all of the families in Little Fork, but do
recall a couple more. One was the Price family, who had
a daughter named Annabell. Another, was the Blake family.
Anabell married Roy Blake. One other was the Morris family. The
fathers name was Ernie, his wife Lola, daughters Ernestine, and Carolyn. (not sure if I spelled Carolyn correctly). So Paula, am I talking about the same Scarbro family as you? Dennis, could you send this to Paula?" Thanks, Bob Perry |
| Feb 20, 2008 | "Dennis, on 3-31-06, Jessica Settle,
wrote to you wanting to know if anyone had a picture of the Kingston Elementary School. Well in 1988, my family, and I took a trip back to WV. As I have previously mentioned, I grew up on Mossy, attended a one room school at Lick Fork, through the third grade. Beginning with the fourth grade, we were bussed to Kingston, as the Mossy school was shut down. At the time, there were two buildings. One was the grammar school, and the other was the high school. When I graduated in 1953, both were still standing. I do not know when the grammar school was demolished, but when I went back in 1988, it was gone. All of the high school students were now attending school in Oak Hill. .......I did take a picture of the school. This photo is of me at the rear side of the school. The sign on the building, says, Kingston Elementary School. The young girl in the back ground is my youngest daughter, Laura Lee. All of the miners houses in Kingston had been torn down, but I do remember a small building that had a sign saying, " Kingston Post Office". I couldn't understand why they needed a post office, when no one lived in the town. Hope the picture will turn out ok." Bob Perry |

Settle, so if you would be so kind to forward this to her I would
appreciate it. Jessica may already know what I am going to say, but here goes. I grew up on Mossy, and did not live too far from the Settle family. Now I am assuming I have the correct family. They lived up in the hollow past Reed Payne's house. I knew an Oliver Settle but do not remember his wife's name. Their daughters names were Naomi, and Inez. Leonard was their son, but I don't reallyremember him very well, as I was very young at the time. Another son was Eldridge Elgin, who was a friend of mine at the time. Inez married a guy from Dothan named "Sleepy Posten". I don't remember his real first name, and not sure if I spelled his last name correctly. They lived in a little white house on Mossy road, close to Dothan. The house was formally owned by a Mr. Armstrong. ( My sister, Dorothy, at one time dated "Sleepy". Thanks, Bob Perry |

My dad worked in the Kingston mines and was fired because of a miners strike. I heard my dad, Webster Lively, mention a Perry many times. He was probably one of the many miners that were fired. I know about Lick Fork too. One of my dad's best friends, Gordan Payne, lived in Lick Fork. Please pass on my address to anyone that request it. Thanks Dennis and keep up a great web-site." Roy L. | Feb 12, 2008 | "In response to Bob Perry
Feb 6 & 7, 2008 messages: Bob, yes my
grandfather, Earl Webster Clifton, delivered the mail around
Mossy, Dothan, and various places. I was in grade school and when I
had a day off I would go with him to deliver the mail. I loved it and
he always called me John instead of Janet. He wanted a grandson..
After delivering the mail, we always stopped at Clay's Pool Hall in
Scarbro as it was on the way back home. He would go in and get me a
pop and bring it out to the truck, then by the time he drank 4-6
beers, I had to drive him home (without a license) so he could spit
his tobacco all down the outside of his truck. I remember the
Rineharts, Yoney's, Payne, and a lot more. My grandfather passed in January of 1960, my grandmother's were Alma (lst wife) passed ????, Bess 2nd wife (passed in Mexico is what I was told) and Alena 3rd (passed ???) so my grandfather was a busy and exciting man. His sons were Billy (William) Clifton passed when he was 39 from Detroit, Clayton (passed ?) from Detroit, Maxine Pennington (Passed ???) from Philadelphia, Gigs (Earl) Clifton, passed in Bradenton, Florida ???. Carroll "Feets" Clifton was my Dad. After he worked in the mines for 25 yrs, he was laid off on his and Mom's 25th wedding anniversary so they moved to Moundsville, WV. He was a security guard at the Moundsville Penitentiary, then he moved to Ohio and retired from Warner and Swazey. Then he decided to go to Florida. He and my Mom opened up a Cattle Ranch called Clifton & Son Double "C" Cattle Ranch, over 500 head of cattle, 20 horses, 400 goats, etc. My father passed 4 weeks after my son Jeffrey Clifton Thomas (34 yrs. from melanoma cancer) Dad passed from lung cancer and mine dust. This was in March and April 2001. Leaving my Mom and my brother Sylvester Carroll Clifton Jr. to manage the ranch. Unable to do that, Mom went into a massive heart attack and passed at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton peacefully just like a beautiful angel. I missed her by 20 minutes saying goodbye so when I walked into her room, with her hands crossed, she was the most beautiful angel I have even seen. She just went to sleep with no pain. Now it is just my sis Mona Haymore (Bradenton, FL) & my brother who lives in Palmeto, FL. I live in Parma, Ohio with my 4 grown children and 9 grandchildren. The Ranch has been sold, along with 120 acres that they had about 1/2 hr. away. So without Mom and Dad, and my son that is no longer our Home anymore. There is only one Clifton left and that is my Uncle Carlos CLifton and he lives in Bradenton, Fla. since his wife Shirley, passed he is the only one that can carry on the original Clifton Boys that is left out of Scarbro Hollow. My Grandfather and Grandmother Alena are buried at Blue Ridge Memorial. My Mom and Dad are buried in Florida at the Palmeto Memorial Gardens. Dennis, if anyone wishes to contact me it is OK to give them my email. I would be so happy to hear from anyone. Bob & Betty Lou (Perry), I was so glad to get your email and I wish to thank Dennis so much. I love reading his column. Keep up the good work. I still will be sending pictures as soon as I can get time to go thru them, boxes and boxes, Between mine, mother's and Mona's. I know we have some good ones." the blanks that Jane Christian Digmon left regarding
Miss Smith's 2nd grade class at Scarbro Elementary 1950-51; to

pleasure to send you and
picture of
Mrs. Mattie Massie, affectionately known as 'Granny' to
everyone that has ever met her. She is a long term resident of
Carlisle and is truly the belle of the Carlisle, Whipple, and Scarbro
Area. Yesterday, Feb. 8, 2008 she celebrated her 100th birthday. She
is as agile and alert as someone half her age and is a virtual history
book of the events occurring in our area. A birthday celebration for her was held last Saturday at the Oak Hill Methodist Community Center (a.k.a. the armory) with somewhere between 215-250 friends attending from all walks of life. She had three tables covered with scrapbooks and pictures of events and people from our area. It was really interesting to see the articles she had kept through the years. All of us wish her a continued healthy and happy life. Keep up the good work with the site." BJ Bernath |

| Feb 7, 2008 | "Hello again Dennis: I agree with a lot of other
people, your page is very interesting. Keep up the good work.
I e-mailed you for the first time yesterday, and will follow up with
another today. As I previously mentioned, I grew up in Mossy.
During my senior year, my parents moved to Oak Hill. So to continue my
final year at Kingston High School, My coach and teacher, Mr. John Marra, would give me a ride to and from school. He also lived in Oak Hill. Just a little more personal history about myself, then I will change the subject. After graduation, I briefly worked at the A&P store in Oak Hill. I then joined the U.S. Air Force. After that, I came to Chicago Il. at the end of 1957. I got married in 1960, and have lived in the Chicago Suburbs since that time. We had three children, and now have nine grandchildren. In my last E-Mail, I mentioned that I knew C Omer Coleman. So today, I will mention a couple more. First off, I knew the mailman, Earl Clifton. Yes, he was our mailman when I was a young boy, living on Mossy. I remember he drove a pick-up truck, either a Ford or Chevy. On many occasions, I would wait by the road for him to show up. He always had a kind word to say to me, and would let me stand on the running- board of his truck. O.K. one more for this time. I also knew Earl (Giggs) Clifton. If I am correct, his wife's name was Effie. They were our neighbors on Mossy for several years. I was friends with their children, Jackie, and Bonnie June. I once took Bonnie June to a school dance, although, I'm not sure if we ever danced.... More next time. Please E-Mail this to Omer Coleman, and Janet Clifton Miles." Bob Perry |

neighbors, as I live in Lombard (IL). My name is Robert L Perry. Every one calls me Bob. I was born in Kingston, WVa in 1936. At one year old, my parents, Ashworth and Jewell, moved to Mossy. I had two sisters, Dorothy and Betty Ann, who have since passed away. As a child, I attended a one room school which was located at the mouth of Lick Fork. After I finished Third grade, they closed the school. We then had to attend school in Kingston. I graduated in 1953. One of the people I knew all of my school years was C. Omer Coleman. If this is the same person, he had a sister named Betty Lou. Feel free to pass this to Omer. There are other people on your page that I know, but will save that for another time." Robert L Perry |

If I find any of this info, I will let you know. Anna was my paternal grandmother, Gabriela my aunt. I am a Huntington native, but live in Lexington, KY now. I have visited the cemetery a couple times. Thanks for all you've done!" Mary (Bronosky) Oliva |

| Jan 2, 2008 | "Very interesting site. Glad someone is interested in keeping history alive. I am wondering if you have any pictures or information on the Hambrick family. My grandfather was Alfred Hambrick and he lived in Glen Jean. He built and lived in the house on the hill across road from the trailer park. It is just above the gas station. You can't hardly see it from the road except when the trees lose their leaves. I am interested in anything you or anyone else might have on him or his family. Thank you." Randy Epperly |
