Edward Livingston Webb,
brakeman, and Virginian RR crew c1910's
|
|
"My grandfather, Edward Livingston Webb, born
in Paint Creek, married my grandmother, Harriette Stephenson,
in Scarbro on Aug 11, 1910. At the time they were married he was a
brakeman for the Virginian Railroad. He had worked in the Oak Hill,
Scarbro, And Whipple mines, but was black balled for being a union
sympathizer, and organizer. His wish was to work with the union, but
my grandmother was opposed, he went to work for the Virginian RR. He
worked for the Virginian RR long enough to become an engineer. His
picture is in a Virginian RR history book. My grand father worked
for the Virginian until his retirement. Both my grand parents died
in 1956." |

Catholic procession at the St. Peter & Paul Church about 1915
|
|
This is a picture of a Catholic procession at the
St. Peter & Paul Church about 1915. My Dad, Andrew Dziedzic,
is shown as second from the right. .. The word "Krowiarz" on the
banner held by the man to my Dad's left is a Polish word. I think it
means "dairymen." |

Whipple Company Store
1910-1920
|
|
"...I was out walking last weekend and was quite surprised to find the Whipple Company Store open for business. I went in and found it to be chock full of antiques and collectibles. After looking around for a while I got to talking with the owner and telling him about the Scarbro-Carlisle-Whipple web site. He was a very nice gentleman and quite interested in the history of the area. He gave me this picture of the Whipple Company Store 1910-1920 and school with ball park and bleachers that he thinks dates to about 1910-1920 era to submit to you, I would encourage anyone traveling to the area to stop by the store and take a look at history as it was. He also has a printing press in the basement and does job printing. He does the printing for George Bragg who has numerous publications on the Fayette County area and its history. George also has the negatives of almost all of the old panoramic coal mine and work force pictures that R.E. Ribble of Mount Hope took many years ago. George also own the original camera that was used on the group photos and uses it quite regularly to take reunion pictures for various groups including the Scarbro, Whipple, Carlisle reunion...."
